We have until March 5 to get the required signatures to send this to the President for her pardon. The last petition came up short, but we can make it this time!

This petition for Marissa Alexander isn't going to make it unless YOU sign it! We have until the 26th of January!
Come ON people, I have seen posts about shopping get more attention than this petition. Please help get this message out there. Post on Facebook and other sites. This is a grave injustice.
A reminder of who Marissa Alexander is and why this is an urgent issue:
PARDON MARISSA ALEXANDER WHO WAS JAILED FOR 20 YEARS IN FLORIDA FOR TRYING TO PROTECT HERSELF AGAINST AN ABUSIVE EX-
Marissa Alexander was sentenced to 20 years in prison. Marissa is the victim here. Her husband beat her while she was pregnant. After yet another beating, Alexander fired a warning shot which traveled through a wall and into the ceiling. That shot saved her life. She didn’t kill anyone. Prosecutor Angela Corey did not take into account that Marissa Alexander had a court injunction against her crazed husband. She had given birth 9 Days earlier and was trained to use a weapon and earned a concealed weapons permit. Whilst the Stand Your Ground Law has been successfully used by other people in the State of Florida, that law didn’t apply to Marissa Alexander although she was a victim of Domestic Abuse.
Please try to help this woman. She was protecting herself from an abusive spouse, and she has three young children who need her. It’s a travesty that she’s locked up. Please sign.

college students, Bigwords.com is a conventient sort of search site that rifles through all sorts of online stores and ads looking for the text books you need, newest edition, you can look specifically for used books or ones with a buyback program, and stuff. and can be a lot cheaper, saved me $400 one semester
Can we amplify this a little please? I’m sure some of my followers could use this resource. Spread it around friends.
Also, Abebooks.com, Half.com, and Alibris.com. We bought some of our textbooks for one dollar.

signal boosting: Hobby Lobby are assholes
For the people on my flist who do arty crafty things:
Hobby Lobby has decided that their oppressive religious beliefs trump federal mandate, and are refusing to pay for their employee’s health care because it includes coverage for emergency contraception. They feel so strongly about denying this care to their female employees that they are willing to pay fines up to 1.3 million fucking dollars PER DAY.
That is how much Hobby Lobby hates and loathes and despises women. They hate women so much that losing 1.3 million dollars a day is worth it to them so long as they get to punish women that they think are godless sluts.
Please give your arty crafty money to literally anyone else on earth.I have only seen this on my dashboard ONCE. It’s kind of a big deal to me, so if you’d consider reblogging I’d be grateful. It’s KILLING ME that Hobby Lobby make the vast majority of their money off of women, and yet are more than willing to be fined huge amounts just so they can deny the women who work for them their legally protected (the motherfucking SCOTUS stepped up) rights to reproductive control over their OWN GODDAMN BODIES.
And when I looked under the hobby lobby tag on tumblr most of what I saw was people wailing about how the Xtian fundamentalists who own the chain are being denied their religious freedom.
To me, this is the very definition of FUCKED UP.
And before you think about giving your money to Michael’s, you might want to know they are owned by Bain Capital. So far only Jo-Ann’s seems safe.
Yes, definitely. Also, depending on what sort of crafting you do, you may want to look into local or independent businesses. I’m a knitter, so it’s really not that difficult for me to find places to go that aren’t the big name craft stores, if I don’t mind waiting. I’ve shopped on etsy and hyenacart (which can be expensive depending on what you’re buying), Amazon, ebay, and yarncountry.com. I high recommend ebay for knitting needles and yarncountry.com for quality yarn that isn’t overly expensive.
I know there are other options for other sorts of crafting. Though I personally don’t like Walmart and disagree with its practices (especially as a former employee), my mother in law shops there for her food anyway, and buys jewelry making supplies there.
Well then.

WANTED: 50, 000 Interested Readers
Hi there. My name is Vivid, otherwise known by my pen name, L. Holland. Don’t be surprised that you haven’t heard of me: I’m not a published author. But you can help with that, just by reading this.
Early this year I did some inquiries regarding book publishing. I was in the early planning stages of my first novel, and wanted to know how to go about getting my work published once I was finished writing and self-editing. The woman I spoke to told me all about my options: agents, self-publishing, or just sending out my manuscript to every publishing house possible. All of it I had heard before.
However, then she told me what I’m going to talk about right now:
“If you can prove that you have a readership of at least 50, 000, it could work as a great foot in the door for you with most agents/publishing houses.”
At the time 50, 000 seemed like a huge, unreachable number. However, now that I think about it, it can’t be that unattainable.
So here’s what I’m going to do. I’m going to list some of things that feature in my novel, and if they sound at all like the kind of shit you’re into, reblog this post. These include:
- an asexual, agender protagonist
- and the story doesn’t center around their being asexual/non-gendered— it’s about them having an epic adventure
- the story isn’t about romance— it’s mostly about friendship
- people with cool, horrifying and crazy-ass powers + lots of fight scenes
- not just teenagers saving the day: also young adults, adults and older folks
- cats, LOTS and LOTS of CATS. Why? You’ll have to wait to find out.
- includes individuals of all ages, races, body types, genders, and sexualities
- also bad-asses of all ages, races, body types, genders and sexualities!
- Eldritch Abominations/Monsters — do you like teeth and tentacles? Then this is definitely for you!
- ACTION, and also quite a bit of gore. Blood, guts and bones? You betcha.
- (I have also been informed there is much “shipping fun” to be had?)
Also, I aim to address the issues that I outlined in this post. Plus many more.
These days YA books seem to be all about romance, and the importance of being in a relationship. While this is fine, I know that I’m certainly not the only person who is bored with this. I want to be one of the many authors who are seeking to change that. If you would like to help me with my writing, simply reblog this post and share it with your friends/followers. If I can reach 50, 000 I will have a shred of proof that this is something that people want.
Are you an aspiring author who is writing/wants to write a story that breaks away from today’s convention? Then send me a message! Let’s network and get our shit published.
Also, while I’m at it, I am in the market for an artist. If you have magical art skills, are looking for a big project, and any of this sounds right up your alley, send me a message and let’s have a chat.
To sum up, if anything I just mentioned sounds like something you would enjoy reading, reblog this post. You’d be doing me a huge favor. Thank you!

Petitioning the White House to stop transplant discrimination against autistic people
We have until December 14 to get 25,000 signatures on it. You need to live in the USA, and you should seriously sign, signal boost, tumblr bomb, anything you can. Lives are on the line- lives of people like me.
Reminder.
Okay, I am judging you for the fact that this still needs 23,000 out of 25,000 signatures, Tumblr. What the fuck.
Um, do people not understand that this so so people with autism can get life-saving organ transplants, instead of given a death sentence on the grounds that our lives are inherently worthless?
Do you think this doesn’t happen to young adults?
23-Year-Old Autistic Man Denied Heart Transplant at UPenn Hospital
Do you think this doesn’t happen to children with various developmental disorders?
3-Year-Old Amelia Rivera Denied Kidney Transplant
Do you think this doesn’t happen to adults with Down’s Syndrome?
32-Year-Old Sandra Jensen Denied Heart Transplant

“Contraindicated.” That quite literally means that they considered saving a cognitively impaired person’s life HARMFUL.

Except you can’t show a topless woman on TV - and you can’t defibrillate a woman in a bra. So victims of heart attacks on TV are *always* male. Did you know that a woman having a heart attack is more likely to have back or jaw pain than chest or left arm pain? I didn’t - because I’ve never seen a woman having a heart attack. I’ve been trained in CPR and Advanced First Aid by the Red Cross over 15 times in my life, the videos and booklets always have a guy and say the same thing about clutching his chest and/or bicep.
And people laugh when I tell them women are still invisible in this world.Things I did not know, but should.

My mom worked for 25 years as an ER nurse and is convinced that a lot of women die simply because folks only know heart attack symptoms that occur in males.

I know this is long but it's important.
TW: child abuse, sexual abuse, neglect, abduction, “troubled teen” facilities
(If you want to skip over this post on your dash press the J key)
People are getting all up in arms about Mitt Romney’s tax returns and how much money he made working with Bain Capital. But I see absolutely nothing about CRC Health Group and Aspen Educationbeing discussed alongside it. Nothing.
These are corporations aquired by Bain Capital in 2006, CRC Health Group being the corporation that owns Aspen Education. Aspen Education is a corporation that profits off of the “teen help and rehabilitation” industry. They have slick advertising and market their services to families with “struggling” teens, be it drug or alcohol abuse or getting a C in math class.
These facilities have a long history of physically, emotionally, and sexually abusing children and teens. There have been a slew of news stories over the past decade or more that are quickly forgotten that report on a “rehabilitation” clinic for teens where the unqualified counselors have done things such as solicit sexual favors from the kids they work with or even leaving them shut in a room to die because they claim the kid screaming in pain is lying to get attention.I’m not exaggerating.
And the abusers, the staff at these facilities, nearly always walk away unscathed. One of the reasons why is that their contracts they manipulate already vulnerable families into signing are potentially illegal. They demand that the parents or legal guardians of the child sign over legal custody to the facility, while in the same contract they deflect all responsibility for any harm, emotional or physical, that could befall the child, including death. And kids have died—see the articles linked above. They have been starved, denied medical attention, killed themselves, overheated, or frozen to death or nearly died because of these things.
But there are other human rights violations besides these that go on regularly at Aspen Education facilities. Clients (the kids and teens) are denied certain reading material, mail that is deemed “inappropriate” (letters from friends or non-facility-approved family members), private phone conversations (calls are very limited to begin with), immediate phone access to call police or their parents if something is wrong, personal property that is not “suitable”, even speaking to other clients is sometimes forbidden. This is a violation of civil rights, whether the client is a minor or not.
The facilities themselves are also atrocious, if the clients sleep inside at all (in Aspen wilderness programs there is no place to sleep indoors, even in winter or high summer). Clients are forced to clean as punishment, as Bain Capital cut massive costs to these already shady programs so there is no professional cleaning service to keep the living conditions sanitary. Medications (which are widely prescribed) are often administered by unqualified staff. There are often no trained nurses on the grounds—they may have been laid off or fired or simply quit and not replaced. Clients are packed 4-6 to a room that should only comfortably fit two kids and their belongings. Childen run the risk of being forced to live with kids who are violent and could harm their peers. The counselors are often questionably trained, and Aspen Education widely uses tactics of causing emotional damage to the child in their method of “therapy”. Food, water, sleep, and outdoor access can be denied as punishment in these programs. They psychologically break down the child to build them back up again, brainwashed.
Now what do families pay to have their children living like this? Anywhere from $6,000-$18,000 per month. There is obviously no financial aid or scholarships available. Wherever that money is going, it’s not to the facilities or even to pay the underqualified workers there (oftentimes they make minimum wage or a little over). That money is going straight to the executives of Aspen Education, CRC Health Group, and Bain Capital. Even though Romney “retired” in the early 2000s, he still kept a stake in the profits of the company and managed from behind the scenes. This means that Mitt Romney is making money off of abused children and teens. The corporations know about all these scandals or they wouldn’t be covering them up so well. People have tried to sue, but it is an unpleasant process that often ends with Aspen turning to their contracts and claiming they have no responsibility, or they settle it out of court and that’s it.
Oh but there’s more! For a small fee, escorts can be hired to kidnap the child from their own home to bring them to a program. They are recommended by Aspen, and parents sometimes comply and hire them. They will come to the house, grab the child or teen, handcuff them and bring them to the facility, sometimes crossing state lines to do so.
These human rights abuses are happening right now in the United States, with over 30,000 clients experiencing Aspen Education’s practices every day. This needs to stop, but the problem is that absolutely no one is talking about it. I’ve never seen a post about it on Tumblr, and the news that pops up about it goes away quickly and doesn’t make front pages. This is big. Families are being scammed and vulnerable young adults, teens and children are being tortured right here in our country and no one’s doing a thing.
Spread the word. Please. Don’t reblog if you don’t want to, but start doing research and talking about this with people. Bring it up when Romney is mentioned. Something needs to be done!
